Abstract

How do we look at the commonplace in a critical context?

Can we see the iPhone through a lens of conflict minerals, material culture studies, psychology, or philosophy and criticism?

How does the everyday coexist as the problematic?  Do we see global connections to the nondescript?  Some things by design are created to disappear, seamlessly integrating into the fabric of our being.  This project seeks to destabilize views of the mundane objects one takes for granted as basic facets of privileged, modern American life—looking at such items in a wider, more expository context.
